Fresh off a plane from Vitoria airport, Brazil, Socceroos goalkeeper and Eels fan Maty Ryan stopped by Parramatta over the weekend to visit the club he has adored for as long as he can remember.

Visiting Pirtek Stadium to watch the Eels final training run before their Round 16 match, Ryan recalled the heartbreak of the 2001 Grand Final loss at the hands of the Knights. It was ironic timing, as Ryan was on hand at the game on Sunday as Newcastle again defeated his beloved Blue and Gold.

For Ryan, Eels fullback Jarryd Hayne and his rapid progression from a young rookie to a star of his club and State has been a sporting inspiration.

“I’m very privileged to be here today and socialising with these guys, and meeting them all," Ryan said.
