EELS GET REWARDS DESPITE MISSING OUT ON ONE COMMUNITY SILVERWARE
9.30am, Friday 14 November 2008

The Pirtek Parramatta Eels and Clubman of the year Krisnan Inu have narrowly missed out on accolades at the NRL’s One Community Awards Night, held in Sydney on Thursday.

Inu was nominated for the Ken Stephen Medal, the award for the player adjudged to have made the greatest contribution on and off the field during 2008, while the Eels were one of just four teams nominated for Club of the Year.

The Ken Stephen Medal was taken out by the Gold Coast’s Preston Campbell, for his tireless work for indigenous causes, while the New Zealand Warriors claimed Club of the Year for their community efforts, including the implementation of an Auckland-wide anti-bullying campaign.

Eels Community & Development Manager Gareth Holmes says simply to be nominated in both categories was reward in itself for a year of hard work.

“I’m immensely proud of the work done by our players and staff in the community over the past 12 months and to be nominated for two awards is fair recognition of what we’ve achieved,” Holmes said.

“Most Parra fans would be aware of the work Krisnan does, mostly off his own bat I might add, while we’re doing our level best to have a constant presence in schools and around the area year round.

“We started Eels Out and About this season, which is a program designed to properly coordinate our efforts and promote them to the wider community, while at the same time encouraging people to ask us to help out with their worthy causes.

“Our players, together with our incredibly hard working community and ARL Development staff, are out in schools on a weekly basis both in and out of season in an effort to promote healthy living and of course Rugby League and the Eels.

“Just being nominated is an honour and missing out this time around gives us something to aim for in 12 months time.”
