EIGHT EELS GET RLWC08 CALL UP 4.45pm, Wednesday 8 October 2008
The Pirtek Parramatta Eels have had eight players named to take part in the Rugby League World Cup following today’s release of the Fiji, Ireland, Samoa, Scotland and Tonga squads for the tournament, which kicks off on October 25.
Jarryd Hayne has been selected to represent Fiji, while Feleti Mateo, Fuifui Moimoi, Tony Williams, Etu Uaisele and Taniela Lasalo have all been named in the Tongan squad, which is coached by former Eel Jim Dymock.
They will join Eels captain Nathan Cayless and team mate Krisnan Inu in the World Cup after both won New Zealand selection on Tuesday.
Hayne’s selection is subject to the Rugby League International Federation approving his change of representative election while Moimoi will require a special ruling from the RLIF to represent Tonga.
Ten nations will compete in the 2008 Rugby League World Cup featuring 18 matches at 12 venues in QLD, NSW, VIC and ACT over 29 days from October 25 to November 22 with the Final at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium.
England and Papua New Guinea will feature in the first match of the Tournament in Townsville on October 25, with the official opening ceremony to be staged at the Sydney Football Stadium on October 26. The opening ceremony will see Australia open its campaign against New Zealand and will also feature an Australian Indigenous team against the New Zealand Maoris. Parramatta Stadium will host two matches – Ireland v Tonga (Oct 27) and Ireland v Samoa (Nov 5).
