The Parramatta Eels club will once again collect the Flowers Memorial Club Championship pennant after finishing 2008 as the top ranked club in NSWRL competition.

It is the 17th time the club has taken out Club Championship honours.

Club Chairman Alan Overton AM OAM and Chief Executive Denis Fitzgerald AM will be on hand at ANZ Stadium on Grand Final day to collect the pennant, which was last won by the club in 2005.

In 2008 Club Championship points were awarded for the VB NSW Cup, SG Ball and Harold Matthews Cup, with the Eels and NSW Cup affiliate Wentworthville finishing near the top of each competition.

The Parramatta club finished the regular season nine points clear of its nearest rival for the pennant, the Penrith Panthers.

The reach vein of form continued on into the play offs for all three teams, with the Eels winning the Harold Matthews Cup and finishing runner up in the SG Ball.

Wentworthville will play Newtown in the VB NSW Cup decider on Sunday at 12.15pm.

“The Parramatta Club is extremely proud to win the Club Championship for the ninth time in the last 12 years,” Mr. Fitzgerald said.

“It demonstrates that the Eels’ Development Program is still the benchmark for all clubs in NSW and the winning of this award is great recognition of the magnificent work done by the coaches, managers, training and medical staff of these grades, who in the majority, act in an honorary capacity.”

The club has a rich history in the Club Championship, winning it for the first time in 1976. That victory sparked a seven-year run for Parramatta, winning it in every subsequent season until 1982.

Another win in 1986 was followed by an 11 year break, before the Eels embarked on another seven year streak between 1997 and 2003.

The 2005 club championship was Parramatta’s most recent until this year’s win.
